Wayne Howes
Wayne Howes was born June 9, 1945. He is the son of the late
Richard and Pearl Fontenot Howes. He grew up on a strawberry farm
east of Ponchatoula belonging to his parents and grandparents, Henry and
Katie Howes.
He is a 1963 graduate of Ponchatoula High School. While at PHS he
was an active participant in the FFA and 4-H organizations. Wayne
enrolled at LSU in September of 1963, and while there he served as
president of the College of Agriculture and was also a member of the LSU
student council. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in
agricultural education.
Wayne began his teaching career at Mandeville High School in 1968 and
then taught ninth and tenth grade agriculture classes at Clinton from
1970-1976. In 1976 he transferred to Springfield High School as an
agriculture teacher. Wayne received a Masters degree from LSU in
1977 with a major in ag education and a minor in horticulture.
Wayne taught at Springfield High School for 25 year. During the
1985-1986 school year he served as president of the Louisiana
Agriculture Teachers Association. He retired from teaching in 2001
and now spends his time raising strawberries and other produce on the
farm he grew up on.
Wayne has been married to his wife, Mary Elizabeth Peavy, for 39 year
and they have four children and nine grandchildren.
